As far back as I can remember I have been surrounded by art materials. My mother and uncle were both trained artists and art supplies were commonplace. I realized back in my childhood that practice does create perfection and the more I attempted and familiarized myself with each media-the more adept I became. I use this idea with my students, if we are working with color theory-I try to surround them with materials to allow for discovery-practice and processes. Can they mix to make orange-with paint? how about with crayons? scraps of magazines? colored clay? I need them to explore and persist until they understand. When your child comes to the Art room, I'd like them to say "it was fun", "we played with clay", "you should have seen the lego car I built", "we acted out the painting" as well as "we learned...."
