World Language Education Course Selections

9561 GERMAN I 1.0 Credit Grades 10-12
German I is an academic introduction into the cultures of Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. Discussing school, talking about music and sports, and getting together with friends are all part of the first year experiences. Cultural events such as Oktoberfest are celebrated. This course is focused on basic vocabulary and expressions.

9563 GERMAN II 1.0 Credit Grades 10-12
German II continues the appreciation for the Germanic perspective on life. Readings on travel, clothing, food, and opportunities for active participation guarantee that the student will feel at ease in a German speaking country. Students will have the opportunity to sample German foods, research German clothing, and design the house of their dreams. This course is focused on expanding vocabulary and learning the grammar needed to create past, present, and future – tense sentences.

9565 GERMAN III 1.0 Credit Grades 10-12
(prerequisite: at least 80% in German II is strongly recommended)
German III is designed to prepare the student for travel. Airport, hotel, and sightseeing vocabularies are presented. Reading skills are enhanced by short stories. Complex and sophisticated communication skills will be gradually developed in this course. Videos and the internet will also be used to enhance the learning experience.

9562 HONORS GERMAN IV 1.0 Credit Grades 11-12
(prerequisite: at least 80% in German III is strongly recommended)
German IV is an advanced course designed to develop maximum speaking proficiency. Units of study include: the Grimm fairy tales, German music, history, and holiday celebrations. Students will have the option of taking this course as an honors level course within the traditional level IV class. Independent projects and work outside the classroom experience will be required to receive weighted credit value.

9582 HONORS GERMAN V 1.0 Credit Grade 12
(prerequisite: minimum 80% in German IV, and/or teacher recommendation)
German V focuses on texts, and audio and video recordings in the authentic language in order to acquire a deeper understanding of the current German language and culture. Students will be required to produce the German language in both speaking and writing. By the end of the course, students will be capable of comprehending a variety of authentic texts and the daily spoken language, and communicating their basic thoughts, ideas, and information in German.

9551 FRENCH I 1.0 Credit Grades 10-12
French I is an introduction to the French language and culture. The focus of this course will be using basic vocabulary and standard sentence structure for verbal and written comprehension and production. By the end of this course, students will be expected to be able to respond to questions in complete sentences, as well as converse at an elementary level through guided dialogue.

9553 FRENCH II 1.0 Credit Grades 10-12
French II begins where French I ended. The course will increase students’ vocabulary and grammatical “connaissances” as well as their ability to respond to more complex questions. Additionally, students will learn how to gather information and decipher new vocabulary and grammatical concepts through context. Although usually guided, speaking will offer more opportunities for varied and “ad-libbed” responses.

French III continues to expand upon vocabulary and grammatical concepts. Topics are now covered in more depth and will require detail-oriented thought and execution. Students will read short texts and work to improve pronunciation and intonation via self-recordings. By the end of this course, students will be expected to be able to use a variety of verb tenses to express themselves in verbal and written communications.

French IV offers students a cultural and historic overview of France and her people. Original and creative expression is stressed for proficiency in all aspects of language learning. Students will be required to speak French in class and will be urged to speak French with their teacher and classmates outside of the class. An important goal of this course is to equip students of French to travel to a French-speaking country, communicate with the citizenry, and be knowledgeable about the mores and customs of that society. There will continue to be a heavy emphasis on French and Francophone culture.

Spanish I is an academic course which stresses pronunciation, vocabulary building, grammar mastery, oral proficiency, and cultural appreciation. Classroom activities include daily oral and written vocabulary and grammar drills, conversation practice, oral and written presentations, skits, and review activities, etc. Students are expected to develop disciplined study habits.

9543 SPANISH II 1.0 Credit Grades 10-12
Spanish II follows the Spanish I format. Vocabulary and grammatical concepts learned in Level I form the foundation for continued study. Expectations include the ability to understand and respond to more advanced instructions in Spanish and to use the language in directed and creative speaking, reading, and written activities.

(prerequisite: at least 80% in Spanish II is strongly recommended)
Spanish III develops the proficiency of more sophisticated and complex communication skills. Grammar and vocabulary are presented with multiple examples, graphics, and visuals to illustrate all concepts clearly. Strategies for developing listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills are included in each section. Video, CD-ROM, internet, etc., will be used to enhance learning. An overview of Latin American geography, history, and literature is also presented. Come and speak Spanish!

Spanish IV develops maximum proficiency in speaking, understanding, reading, and writing the Spanish language. In addition to new and exciting vocabulary and grammar units, the course offers a thorough presentation of Spain, their people, traditions and customs, etc. An overview of Spanish history, literature, art, and geography is presented as well as specialty units on bullfighting, Christmas, travel, etc. Video, music, the internet, etc., are integrated into this course to enhance the learning process. Be prepared to speak Spanish. Honors Spanish IV will also include at least one project per marking period. (e.g. create a newspaper, board game, conduct an interview, etc …)
